Resin Price Spikes: What Mold Buyers Should Do When Virgin Resin Gets Expensive
Virgin resin is usually the biggest line on an injection-molding cost sheet, and resin price spikes hit it first. Polypropylene closed at US$1,424 per tonne on 15 October 2026. That is a 12-month high, up 48.40% in twelve months per the daily commodity benchmark. Brent crude sat near US$105 a barrel the same week. The sections below show what the spike does to your quotes, what one US molder did, and the moves you can copy.
PP benchmark: US$1,424/t (US$1.42/kg), 15 October close. A 12-month high.
Move: +48.40% year on year; +5.17% in the last 7 days; 52-week range US$894.05–US$1,424.
Crude: Brent near US$105/barrel mid-October, volatile on Middle East shipping risk.
How bad are resin price spikes right now?
The benchmark closed at US$1,424 per tonne on 15 October. That is a fresh 12-month high. Twelve months ago the same tonne cost far less. The benchmark is up 48.40% year on year, and the 52-week range now runs US$894.05 to US$1,424.
The move is recent. On 7 October the benchmark sat at US$1,279. Eight days later it printed US$1,424. That is an 11% jump in just over a week. Brent crude hovered near US$105 a barrel the same week. It whipsawed on attacks against Saudi Aramco facilities and shipping near the Strait of Hormuz.
At US$1,424 a tonne, polypropylene sits at its highest print in twelve months. Track it on the daily PP benchmark before you approve any quote that assumes stable resin.
Why resin moves your part price more than labor does
Resin is the one cost you cannot machine away. Labor, cycle time, and overhead barely move on an existing tool. The pellet price moves every week, and resin price spikes move the part price with it.
A 50-gram PP housing carries about US$0.07 of resin at the US$1.42/kg benchmark. The 11% jump since 7 October added nearly a cent to every housing. On a million-part program, two weeks of market movement cost roughly US$8,000. That is on parts you may have already quoted.
Our injection molding cost sheet breaks down where the money goes on a typical part. When resin is the biggest line, a spike is not a rounding error.
What one large US molder did
Advanced Drainage Systems, the US pipe maker, buys more recycled HDPE than almost anyone. In fiscal 2026 it bought 388 million pounds of recycled plastic, 38% of its total resin purchases. That was the lowest recycled share in five years, down from 46% the year before, because virgin resin was cheap.
Then virgin spiked. The company pivoted back to recycled “quite quickly over the last 60 days,” CFO Scott Cottrill told investors. “Honestly, faster than I thought we could.” A US$30 million recycling plant expansion in Cordele, Georgia ramped up in June. It helped offset what the company called war-driven price spikes in virgin resin. CEO Scott Barbour said the recycling business “bears a lot of fruit in these inflationary times.” The target is 1 billion pounds of recycled purchases a year by fiscal 2032.
ADS bought 388 million pounds of recycled plastic in fiscal 2026. It still called 38% the lowest share in five years.
| Fiscal year | Recycled plastic bought | Share of resin purchases |
|---|---|---|
| FY2025 | 540 million pounds | 46% |
| FY2026 | 388 million pounds | 38% |
The buyer lesson is not to build a recycling plant. It is to keep a second material path open: a recycled-content grade qualified on your drawings, and a supplier who can switch. The full case is reported by Resource Recycling.
Three moves to make before you sign the PO
First, write a resin clause into the supply agreement. Tie the unit price to a named benchmark, such as ICIS, Platts, or a regional index. Set a review trigger, for example ±5% in a quarter. Without that clause, the molder eats the spike or quietly thins the part. Neither helps you. Our notes on negotiating agreements with contract manufacturers cover the contract mechanics.
Second, ask what resin price the quote assumed. A quote built on September pellets is fiction in October. In volatile months, treat 15 days as a normal validity period, not 30.
Third, design the part so it survives a material change. Uniform walls, cored-out thick sections, and generous draft let a recycled-content grade drop in without a new tool. More ways to cut injection molding cost start with geometry, not haggling.
If your quote does not state the resin price it was built on, you are buying a number, not a part.
Recycled resin in your parts: what changes in the mold
Recycled PP and HDPE mold fine. What changes is consistency. Shrinkage drifts between lots, color drifts between batches, and surface finish shows everything.
Three rules from the shop floor. Keep cosmetic faces simple when recycled content is high. Texture hides what polish shows. Write color specs as “black, shade may vary” instead of a Pantone chip you will reject. Widen tolerances on non-critical features, or budget for sorting.
Filled or contaminated recycled streams also wear screws and barrels faster. On high-volume tools running recycled grades, we spec harder steel on wear faces and watch melt temperature drift more often.
Recycled resin does not shrink like virgin resin. Design your tolerances for the drift, not the datasheet.
What to write in your RFQ this month
Four lines to add to every RFQ this month:
- Resin grade and virgin/recycled split quoted, plus the alternative as a second line.
- Resin price per kilo assumed in the quote, with a 15-day validity.
- A benchmark-linked adjustment clause for any program running past six months.
- Confirmation the tool design tolerates recycled-content shrinkage, with cored walls, draft, and no knife-edge shutoffs.
Suppliers who answer all four quickly are the ones who will not surprise you in January.
A quote without a resin price and an expiry date is a guess with a logo on it.
See the real delta with the landed-cost estimator
Opinions are cheap this month; numbers are not. The landed-cost estimator below takes your part weight, quantities, freight, and duty. It shows what resin price spikes do to your landed price. It defaults PP at US$1.15/kg. Overwrite that with your supplier’s pellet price before you trust the output.
A quote is only as current as the resin price inside it.

Duty belongs in the same math. Our US-China tariff relief list for plastics buyers tracks which plastic goods face changing US rates. The estimator adds that rate on top of the resin.
Resin markets move weekly, but tooling decisions last for years. If your program is exposed to the current spike, send us the part drawings. We will quote virgin and recycled-content options side by side, with the resin assumption stated on the quote.
